Frequently Asked Questions
- If I lose air pressure with the Pneumatic Belt Tensioning System will my processor plug?
The Pneumatic Belt Tensioning System comes with a check valve to keep an air leak from causing a sudden lose of belt tension. Furthermore the Scherer Sentry monitors the air pressure on the machine side of the check valve. Once the machine air pressure drops below 120 PSI the operator is notified with a shut down alarm to stop the machine before the processor looses drive power.
- Can I switch the Sentry to read in degrees Celsius?
Yes. The Sentry can be converted to metric measurements through the menu screen. To switch to metric units enter the menu screen by pressing the left button. Then scroll down until you get to ‘Select Units”. Press the right button to select, scroll down to ‘Metric BAR’, Press the right button to select again, then press the left button twice to exit.
- What does the Scherer Sentry monitor?
The Scherer Sentry Monitoring system monitors all 4 processor bearing temperatures, oiler operation, and system air pressure. The operator is notified with a warning when: bearing temp is greater than 180 degrees F but less than 200 degrees F, or there is an oiler alarm (low oil or over pressurization) for less than 10 minutes. The Sentry announces a shutdown with an audible alarm when: bearing temp are greater than 200 degrees F, an oil alarm greater than 10 minutes, or system air pressure less than 120 PSI.
- If I am looking for a new mill, what brand do you recommend?
We recommend CPM/Roskamp Champion for all double and triple high roller grinders.
- If I want my rolls sharpen, how long will it take?
If an appointment is made and the rolls are in the shop by 7-8 am, we can usually have you back on the road by late afternoon the same day. We stock all the parts you will need to reassemble the mill. (Dust seals, bearings, belts, cheek plates).
- What is the largest hardened steel mill roll can you manufacture?
We can build up to 16” diameter and 54” long hardened steel mill rolls. All of these rolls have removable shafts for easy shaft replacement. (Examples being Renn, Automatic, Buffalo/Henke, Harvestor, Bearcat, Davis, Peerless, Gehl)
- How accurate do you balance your custom steel mill rolls?
We dual-plane balance every steel mill roll within 5 grams.
- How do I know when my kernel processor rolls need to be replaced?
If your machine is plugging or you are getting poor silage quality, it may be time for new KP rolls.
- What is the advantage of chromed KP rolls?
It has been proven that by chroming KP rolls you add about 50% roll life. We do not build any KP rolls without adding chrome plating.
- What is the largest Chilled Cast Iron roll that you can sharpen?
We have the capacity of 24” diameter and 84” long.
- What happens if I have a breakdown and need service right away?
Scherer Corrugating has 3 service trucks and crews available to get you up and running within 12 - 24hrs.
- What is the advantage of being in the roll exchange program?
We will provide properly sized rolls for as long as you own the mill. No need to have an extra set of rolls lying around not making any money.
- When is it time to have my mill rolls replaced?
There are 3 things to look for:
- Low motor amps. (The rolls no longer have the bite to pull in the material being ground)
- Poor feed quality. (The rolls will be doing more crushing than grinding)
- Reduced capacity. (Not able to grind the same amount of product as when the rolls were sharp)
